George VI : 1937 - 1952

London
1937 5,501 Proof only

Sovereigns of George VI were only minted for his coronation year, 1937, along with the ½, 2 and 5 pound gold coins.  These were of Proof quality, and because technically they were not considered issued coins, they all have a plain (not milled) edge.  No bullion sovereigns at all were produced with his portrait, like most countries in the years of his reign.  The 1937 sovereign is, therefore, seldom encountered.

Interestingly, however, bullion sovereigns were minted during the period 1949 - 1952, but these were all dated 1925 and had (of course) George V's portrait on them. As a result of this, the 1925 sovereign, which had until then been quite scarece, became one of the more common George V sovereigns encountered. This information was obtained from the excellent definitive book on sovereigns, The Gold Sovereign by R.Marsh 1980 and updated 2002.
